Victories of the Russian Fleet

9 August 1714

The first naval victory of the Russian Fleet over the Swedish squadron at Gangut (Hanko peninsula, Finland), the Baltic Sea.

In this sea battle, the Swedish squadron under the command of Vice Admiral Watrang consisting of 16 battleships, 2 brigantines, 2 assault ships and 8 galleys met the Russian oar-propelled flotilla under the command of Admiral-General Apraksin consisting of 99 galleys which carried 15000 men. Taking advantage of the oar-propelled ships in calm, windless weather conditions, the Russian troops gave a battle nearby the Rilaks fiord. Because of the narrowness of that place only the unit headed by Commander Erenschild consisting of a 19-gun ship, 6 galleys and 4 boats (total 116 cannons) were able to face the Russian advance-guard of 23 galleys under the command of General Weide. In fact, it was Peter the First (Commander Peyotr Mikhailovich) who headed the advance-guard. All the Swedish vessels were captured in that bloody boarding battle. After this battle, Peter the First was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral.

Victory of the Russian squadron under the command of G.A. Spiridonov over the Turkish squadron at the Chesma Harbour.


11 September 1790

Victory of the Russian squadron under the command of F.F. Ushakov over the Turkish squadron at Tendra.

The battle took place on 28-29 August (8-9 September) between the Turkish fortress Hadjubei (city of Odessa) and Tendra Island. Admiral Ushakov had 10 battleships, 6 frigates, 2 assault ships, 17 light vessels (cruising vessels). Commander of the Turkish squadron Kapudash-pasha Hussein had 14 battleships, 8 frigates and 23 small-size ships. Total number of guns: Russian side-830, Turkish-1400. Losses in killed and wounded: the Tuks-2000 men; Russians-21000 killed and 25 wounded.

Victory of the Allied Russian-British-French fleet over the Turkish-Egyptian fleet in the Battle of Navarino.


1 December 1853

Victory of the Russian squadron under the command of P.S. Nakhimov over the Turkish squadron at Sinope.

The battle took place at the Sinope harbour (northern shore of Turkey) on 18 (30) November. Vice-Admiral Nakhimov’s squadron numbered three battleships, one frigate (total 296 guns), and the squadron of Rear-Admiral F.M. Novosilsky, which was also under Nakhimov, consisted of 7 frigates, 2 armed steamships, 2 corvettes, 1 boat, 2 brigs and 2 transports (total 500 guns). Osman-pasha’s squadron was covered and supported by coastal-based batteries. As a result of this battle, all the Turkish ships and batteries were destroyed, whereas the Russian squadron did not lose a single ship at all.
