Project 971U Schuka-B nuclear attack submarine K-152 Nerpa will be leased out to Indian Navy till the end of 2010, reports Interfax referring to a spokesman of Pacific Fleet HQ.

According to the interviewee, the sub is presently in the Sea of Japan passing sea trials with mixed Russo-Indian crew. "It is planned that in December the submarine with an Indian crew will depart for a new deployment site in one of Indian naval bases", said the PF official.

It was initially planned that SSN Nerpa would be leased to India in 2008. However, delivery term was substantially postponed due to the accident happened on board Nerpa after unauthorized activation of automatic firefighting system. 20 persons were injured during that accident in Nov 2008. The sub successfully completed state trials in 2009.

It was recently reported that SSN Nerpa had been already leased to Indian Navy and would be renamed into Chakra; however, that information was refuted afterwards. Representatives of Amur Shipyard said on Aug 20, 2010 that the sub was passing sea trials at that time and would be delivered later.

SSN Nerpa is a 3rd generation nuclear-powered attack submarine. Surface displacement is 8,140 tons, submerged displacement is 12,770 tons, max speed is 30 knots, test depth is 600 meters, crew is up to 73. The sub was commissioned into Russian Navy in Dec 2009.
