Russia advocates for further enhancement of maritime security measures, said Russian representative Andrei Kalinin during the session of UN General Assembly related to maritime law issues.

"The problem of piracy has been recently aggravated, especially off Somali coast. What concerns us most is unsatisfactory situation with bringing pirates to responsibility. The main thing is that pirate bosses escape liability", Kalinin said.

We recall that pirates currently hold over 400 hostages and 20 vessels. Three multinational naval coalitions fight piracy near Somalia. They are EU NAVFOR – Operation Atalanta, NATO Operation Ocean Shield, and US-led operation of joint naval forces.
