Section assembling of Project 636 diesel electric submarine Novorossiysk started at Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard. Shipwrights began to cut metal for further hull assemblage. The sub will join Black Sea Fleet, so she was named after the large port city on the Black Sea coast.

Acting director general of the shipyard Mikhail Aleksandrov said that the submarine would be delivered to Russian Navy in 2013. It is planned to lay down other two non-nuclear subs of this project at Admiralteyskie Verfi for Black Sea Fleet. They are going to be completed in 2014.

Diesel electric submarine Novorossiysk represents one of the most successful projects of non-nuclear submarines designed by Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering. The hull steel was developed at Prometei Research Institute and made at Izhora works. Project 636 is a series of 3rd generation diesel electric submarines, and a modification of Projects 877 and 877EKM known for their excellent performance characteristics. These subs are quite silent; they have state-of-the-art navigational facilities and communication systems, as well as powerful missile/torpedo armament. Test depth is 300 meters; endurance is 45 days; crew is 52 men.
