Black Sea Fleet (BSF) environmental security system has been recently established and effectively operates today. The result of this work is successfully held ecological security activities at the fleet's basing sites and fulfilling instructions of environmental agencies both at Russia's Caucasus seashore and in Ukrainian territory.

The specific role in this process plays the only Russian Navy's ecological monitoring ship Petr Gradov which regularly monitors water areas around basing sites, fleet's coastal infrastructure, and Southern Military District's units deployed in the Black Sea region. The ship's equipment is capable to conduct ecological control of water environment and map-making of pollution zones, provide ecological escorts to combat training activities, and collect data for ecological expertise under Russia's international commitments.

Results of the work made by experts of BSF Environmental Service and ecological monitoring ship Petr Gradov give the fleet's command an opportunity to forecast changes in environmental situation, timely detect pollution sources, and rapidly react.
