Construction of up-to-date frigate Admiral Essen for Russian Navy will start in July at Baltic shipyard Yantar (Kaliningrad), reported ITAR-TASS on May 24 referring to the yard's director general Igor Orlov.

"Keel-laying ceremony of the Project 11356 frigate for Russian Navy will be held on July 8, in the birthday of our shipyard", Orlov said.

Yantar's director general pointed out that the new warship would be the second Project 11356 frigate of the 3-ship series being built by Yantar. The first frigate Admiral Grigorovich meant for Black Sea Fleet was laid down on Dec 18, 2010.

Yantar shipyard constructs three Project 11356 frigates for Russian Navy under defense ministry's tender won in Oct. The distinctive feature of the contract is that it has been the first order for the series of warships in the Russian Navy's contemporary history.

"First two frigates – Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen – are supposed to be delivered late in 2013. The third one is to be laid down at the turn of the year and delivered early in 2014", said Orlov.

Project 11356 frigates are designed for antisurface/antisubmarine/antiaircraft warfare in ocean- and sea-zones both autonomously and as an escort ship within a task force.

Yantar shipyard was established on July 8, 1945. It specializes in construction of small- and medium-size warships and civil vessels, as well as ship repairing. Through its history, the yard has built 154 warships and over 500 civil vessels. Currently, state is the major shareholder of JSC Yantar.
