Rosoboronexport Offers Newest Sub Amur-1650 for Indian Tender 16.12.2011

JSC Rosoboronexport offers newest Russian submarine Amur-1650 for a tender issued by Indian government for procurement and license construction of six non-nuclear submarines.

Russian analog of Project Amur-1650 is Project 677 Lada non-nuclear submarine. In 2010, lead sub of that project – SSK St. Petersburg – was commissioned into Russian Navy.

JSC Rubin Central Design Bureau (St. Petersburg) which developed the Amur-1650 project has already submitted an adapted project for India.

"When selecting a submarine, customer always looks at her combat effectiveness. In this context, Project Amur-1650 has considerable advantage. Its mighty and well-balanced armament includes antiship missiles capable to be launched in salvo. Also, Amur-class subs can perform a new task unusual for non-nuclear submarines, i.e. destruction of land objects by long-range cruise missiles. As of today, only Russia has such missiles in inventory", said Igor V. Vilnit, deputy director general and chief designer of Rubin design bureau.

Currently, the bureau is completing bench tests of the crucially new engine for non-nuclear submarines – air-independent powerplant which would be mounted on Project Amur-1650 submarines. Air-independent powerplant is one of specifications of the Indian tender.

Amur-class submarines have the following advantages amid known analogs:

- capability to deliver salvo missile strikes from all torpedo tubes upon sea and land-based targets
- increased target detection range due to unique sonar system
- higher silence level

"Considering India as a strategic partner in the area of military industrial cooperation, JSC Rosoboronexport permanently increases level of confidence and is ready to transfer the most up-to-date technologies, promoting strengthening and development of Indian defense industry", pointed out Anatoly P. Isaikin, director general of JSC Rosoboronexport. "Advanced school of Russian submarine building is known all across the world. For instance, through 110-year long history of the Rubin design bureau, more than 900 submarines of different types were built under its projects, including over 100 nuclear-powered ones. Wealth of experience of submarine operations in adverse conditions unobtainable for an absolute majority of producers was implemented in those subs. Latest achievements and advanced technologies of Russian nuclear-powered submarines are actively applied to non-nuclear subs as well", emphasized Isaikin.

Basic characteristics of Project Amur-1650 non-nuclear submarines:

- surface displacement – 1,765 cubic meters
- length – 66.8 meters
- strength hull diameter – 7.1 meters
- test depth - 300 meters
- full submerged speed – 19 knots
- endurance – 45 days
- crew - 35 men
- number of 533-mm torpedo tubes – 6
- combat load of missiles, torpedoes, mines - 18
