First experimental non-nuclear submarine with air-independent (anaerobic) powerplant may be constructed for Russian Navy in 2014, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky, Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief told RIA Novosti.

At present, Russian Navy does not have such subs in inventory, operating only nuclear-powered and diesel-electric submarines.

"We may well acquire one air-independent powerplant within the next few years. Already laid down two Lada-class submarines can be platforms for tests which may start in 2014. That is absolutely feasible", Vysotsky said.
