The final phase of the Pomor-2012 Russian-Norwegian naval exercise started on May 15. This stage was held under general direction of Norwegian party and consisted of two main episodes: examination of ships suspected of illegal activities, and artillery engagement against an "enemy" surface ship by main batteries.
In the Norwegian Sea, Russian destroyer
Admiral Chabanenko and Norwegian frigate
Fridtjof Nansen participating in the exercise were joined by Norwegian offshore patrol ship
Senja.
The participants stopped for a few minutes on the border of the Barents and the Norwegian seas. According to traditions of the
Pomor exercise, crews paid military honors to mariners lost in the Arctic waters during the World War II. Servicemen lined up on the decks and laid wreaths on the water.
Having three ships in the task unit, Russian and Norwegian mariners carried out joint maneuvering and damage control drill. Emergency parties practiced firefighting and first aid activities onboard Norwegian patrol ship
Senja.
Russian-Norwegian joint emergency team timely arrived from
Admiral Chabanenko and
Fridtjof Nansen, promptly extinguished a "fire" on board patrol ship
Senja, and rendered professional medical aid to the Norwegian crew. Also, the participants practiced joint search and destruction of "enemy" submarine.
Practical phase of the
Pomor-2012 joint exercise will last till May 16, then destroyer
Admiral Chabanenko will pay a formal call at Norwegian port Bodø. Russian naval mariners will attend festivities associated with the Norwegian Constitution Day.
