Northern Eagle 2012 Planning Conference Kicks Off in Murmansk 23.05.2012

Final planning conference of the Northern Eagle 2012 joint exercise started in Murmansk, Russia. It is attended by representatives of Northern Fleet (NF) combat training department, delegation of US Navy, and officers of Norway's joint operational command.

In Murmansk, the parties will finally determine episodes of the exercise and realization variants of its main concept. During the active phase, it is planned to interact in antiaircraft activities, repelling attacks of small-size fast vessels, communication, ship defense in unprotected harbor, joint maneuvering, and navigation drills.

The first trilateral planning conference took place in Naples, Italy early in March. Participants discussed terms and areas of the coming Northern Eagle 2012 exercise.

Prior to joint training activities, Russian and American warships will pay a formal visit to Norwegian port of Bodø in Aug 2012. Sea phase of the exercise will begin upon termination of that call.

The Northern Eagle exercise was held in Arctic three times (in 2004, 2006, and 2008). Permanent participants are Russian and the US navies. In 2012, Norway will dispatch a frigate to the exercise for the first time.
