First out of six Project 636 diesel electric submarines ordered by Vietnam will be put afloat at Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard (St. Petersburg) in Aug 2012, reports Newsland.ru referring to a source in Russian defense industry.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Dec 2009 announced the $2-bln contract tied with Russia for six Project 636 submarines.

"In accordance with that contract, the first submarine will be launched this month and then begin trials", said the interviewee having specified that the launching ceremony would be held on Aug 28.

He added that the first submarine would be delivered to the client by the year end. It is planned to complete the contract by 2016.

Displacement of Project 636 submarines is 3,100 tons, speed is 20 knots, submergence depth is 300 meters, crew is 52 men. Such subs are armed with 533-mm torpedoes (six tubes), mines, and Caliber missile attack system.
