Russian defense ministry has no plans to modernize Project 1174 ocean-going landing ship Mitrofan Moskalenko, reports Interfax referring to a source in defense industry.

"Modernization of landing ship Mitrofan Moskalenko was found economically inexpedient; besides, the project has become obsolete", the interviewee said.

As for him, "its modernization would cost as much as building of a new ship".

The ship was laid down in Kaliningrad at Yantar shipyard in May 1984; the construction was resumed in 1988. The ship was commissioned in March 1991.
