Northern Fleet (NF) nuclear-powered missile cruiser Petr Veliky on Sept 17 passed the Vilkitski Strait connecting the Kara Sea with the Laptev Sea and continued heading eastward.
Earlier on, the NF task unit comprising missile cruiser
Petr Veliky and rescue tug
Altai was formed in the Kara Sea.
In the Laptev Sea, Russian naval mariners continue improving naval skills and practice rescue operations in arctic zones of the Northern Sea Route.
Ship-based helicopters Ka-27 maintain security of the cruise. They regularly perform ice reconnaissance flights taking off the deck of
Petr Veliky.
The cruiser left Severomorsk on Sept 12; since that day, the ship has covered over 1,200 nautical miles.
The deployment is held under the Russian Maritime Doctrine implying resumption of Russian naval presence in the key regions worldwide.
