Repairing and modernization of Algerian Navy's ships is still within plans of JSC Severnaya Verf shipyard, said the yard's director general Alexander Ushakov.

He said that the third pair of Algerian warships would presumably arrive in Kronshtadt on Nov 15. Overall period of works under the contract tied between JSC Rosoboronexport and Algerian Navy is 32 months. Contractor is JSC Severnaya Verf shipyard.

Earlier on, the shipyard had performed repair and upgrading works on four Algerian ships by two-ship series (one frigate and one corvette). Works on the first pair started in the fall of 2007.

In Feb 2011, the trials were finished, and the ships modernized under projects 1234EM and 1159TM Rais Hamidou and Mourad Rais were handed over to the orderer.

The contract for repair and modernization of the next two ships, frigate Rais Kellich and corvette Salah Rais was signed in the fall of 2008. Currently, both upgraded ships are completing acceptance trials in Kronshtadt and will soon be delivered to Algerian Navy.

According to the third contract signed in Apr 2012, the shipyard will perform works on the last pair of ships, Rais Korfo (Project 1159T) and Rais Ali (Project 1234E).

It should be noted that all six ships are Project 1159T frigates and Project 1234E corvettes sold to Algeria by the USSR in 80's. Interim overhaul and modernization carried out by Severnaya Verf considerably increases their combat capability and makes their service life 10 years longer.
