The keel-laying ceremony of Project 20183 salvage tug Akademik Aleksandrov developed by JSC Almaz Design Bureau (St. Petersburg) took place today, Dec 20, at JSC Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center.
The contract for the ship's construction was tied with defense ministry on Aug 1, 2012. The ice-class ship is designed for search and rescue works, and shipping of large-size equipment, scientific and testing hardware, military and special-purpose cargo. The ship will be possibly used for the shelf exploration works, transportation of pipelines etc. The ship is to join Russian Navy late in 2016.
By the order of Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief, the new ship obtained the name of Akademik Aleksandrov. The initiative to memorize the name of Anatoly P. Aleksandrov, an outstanding physician and one of the founders of Soviet nuclear submarine fleet, was pushed by labor collectives of
Rubin and
Almaz design bureaus, as well as
Zvezdochka shipyard.
Basic technical characteristics of Project 20183 salvage tug: displacement – 5,400 tons; full speed – 14 knots; crew – about 70 men. The ship is equipped with a heliport for staging takeoff/landing of helicopters.
Salvage tug
Akademik Aleksandrov is the third Project 20180 vessel being built by
Zvezdochka. In 2010, the shipyard delivered the Project 20180 harbor salvage tug named
Zvezdochka to the Navy, and is to hand over the Project 20181 armament transportation ship
Akademik Kovalev to the customer in 2014.
