Russia to build ice-protected coast guard vessel


Russia to build ice-protected coast guard vessel 12.11.2007 The Russian Federal Security Service is to hold a tender on the construction of a new ice-protected coast guard vessel for its border guard service. The vessel, which will have both civil and military functions, will be able to operate in 1,5 meter thick ice.

The vessel has been developed jointly by the FSB and the Northern Projection Conctruction Bureau in Sankt Petersburg, Itar-Tass reports. The tender will be hold in the course of the few next months, the FSB confirms.

Two vessels of the kind will be built, and both of them will serve in the Russian far north.

In addition to having military hardware on board, the vessel will also be able to assist with shipping of goods, participate in research missions, exploration of valuable minerals and environmental monitoring.
