Russia might lift sunken sub

Russia might lift sunken sub 24.04.2008 A prominent group of Russian engineers believe the K-159 nuclear sub will be lifted from the sea bottom in the course of the next four years. The vessel sunk in the Kola Bay during a tugging operation in 2003.

The nuclear experts from the Kurchatov Institute believe the sub can be lifted without any hazard to the surrounding environment. The experts do not exclude however that the sub could turn into a risky object after some time.

Nine sailors died when the retired K-159 sunk on its way to the site of dismantling on 30 August 2003.

The Russian Navy’s search and rescue department will be responsible for the operation, Itar Tass reports.
