Nuclear sub returns to Northern Fleet

Nuclear sub returns to Northern Fleet 16.05.2008 After eight years of repairs, the Russian nuclear submarine “Nizhny Novgorod” this month returned to its duties in the Northern Fleet.

The Sierra class B-534 “Nizhny Novgorod” has undergone extensive repairs at the Nerpa shipyard in Snezhnegorsk, Murmansk Oblast.

According to Korabelnaya Storona, Russian authorities long considered to scrap the sub following lack of funding. Now, however, the vessel will serve Russia for at least another ten years, the newspaper reports.

Russia has six Project 945 A Sierra Class submarines, which all serves in the Northern Fleet. The vessels have a crew of 60 men. The ships were all built partly in Nizhny Novogorod and Severodvinsk.
