Gates says would have allowed Russian warships to moor in Miami
28.01.2009 U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that he would have allowed Russian warship to moor in Miami if Russia had not conducted a military operation last August in the Caucasus. He also acknowledged that he was more worried about Iran’s involvement in Latin America than Russia’s.
Gates, who kept his job under the Obama administration, reportedly said on Tuesday that he was concerned about Iran’s increasing involvement in Latin America, which he considered as “interference.”
The defense secretary added that Russia’s presence in the region (last year’s expedition by the cruiser Pyotr Viliky and other warships in the Caribbean) and the increasingly close relations between Russia and Venezuela did not bother him, either.
Gates also said that Russian sailors would have had more fun in Miami than they had in Caracas.
