Russian crew abandon burning trawler in Sea of Okhotsk

A fire broke out in the Russian fishing trawler Ikarma-7 off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. No crewmember was hurt, according to the information center of the Central Command of the Russian Emergency Services for the Kamchatka region.

News of the incident was registered at the port of Nevelsk on January 29 at 5:15 a.m. local time.

The fire broke out in the hold of the ship as it was fishing 170 kilometers west of Cape Lopatka. The section of the ship where the fire broke out was disconnected from power and sealed. The fire has been localized. None of the 95 people on board, amongst them 43 Russian citizens, was injured.

A nearby fishing boat helped evacuate the passengers, and the rescue boat Sprovedlevy is reported to be heading toward the distressed trawler.

The rescued crewmembers are reported to be heading in motorboats toward the nearby fishing boat Zalyv Zabyaka.
