Russian landing ships call at Syrian port of Tartus

30.01.2009
The Azov and Yamal, two large landing ships of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, have entered the Syrian port of Tartus for a business visit.

The ships are supposed to stock on supplies, said Igor Dygalo, an aide to the commander of the Russian Navy.

The landing ships are headed for the Arabian Sea, where they will take part in the Russian-Indian Indra-2009 naval exercises.

A group of warships headed by the heavy aircraft carrier cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov also visited Tartus in January. The port has a materiel-technical facility for the Russian Navy manned by a 50-strong contingent of Russian sailors.
