Russia says has developed effective grenade-launcher to use against pirates
06.02.2009 A grenade-launcher code-named DP-64 and designed as an effective weapon against pirates and diversions at sea for light ships has been developed in Russia.
The system designed by Russian specialists is a grenade-launcher that can also be fired from a gun, meaning without a jet stream back flash. This makes it possible to use the DP-64 in enclosed space and on ships without the risk of destruction to the surrounding environment, Vladimir Korenkov, the general director of Bazalt, the company behind the design, told ARMS-TASS.
The grenades launched from the DP-64 can hit a swimmer at a depth of 500 meters and all types of light surface objects, said Korenkov. He added that the crews of ships using the DP-64 can protect an area of 500 meters around their ship round the clock. The grenade launchers can be installed on turrets and remotely operated.
“We are ready to offer potential clients nonlethal munitions that will only scare off the pirates, not allowing them to approach the ship, and not posing any serious risk to their health,” said Korenkov.
Experts believe that the DP-64 is unique in the world. Commercial ships armed with such a weapon can defend themselves against any pirate attack.
