Ceremony at sailors cemetery in Vladivostok pays tribute to Varyag cruiser’s crew
10.02.2009 A delegation of the command of the Pacific Fleet led by the deputy commander of the Fleet in charge of discipline, Rear Admiral Sergei Belenov, and the administration of the Primorie region and Vladivostok all attended the ceremony. Crewmembers of the guard missile cruiser Varyag, alumni of the Varyag Children Flotilla, as well as those of other children military-patriotic clubs, veterans of the region and the city stood in formation in front of the statue to the victims.
To commemorate the extraordinary feat of the crew of the Varyag, a remembrance gathering was organized in which speakers mentions the extraordinary courage Russian sailors showed in the battle that involved the Varyag, ready as they were to give their lives for their country. They also stressed that for today’s sailors, the exploit of the crew of the Varyag in January 1904 carries a special meaning.
A mass was said by the Vladivostok episcopate of the Russian Orthodox Church. The honor guard saluted by firing guns.
The attendees then deposited wreaths and flowers at the common grave of those who died on the Varyag.
