The crews of the Russian rescue boats Predanny and Taiphun have managed to neutralize a fire that has been raging aboard the Nancy, a Panamanian cargo ship anchored in Nakhodka in the Primorie region, Venyamin Ivanychev, an officer on duty at the Vladivostok Naval Rescue Corporation Center, told Ria Novosti.

The rescuers began putting out the remnant of the fire in the morning. The crew of the Panamanian ship was evacuated the previous day.

“There is now only a lot of smoke and a few burning spots on the cargo ship Nancy, registered under the Panamanian flag. Rescuers from the Predanny will continue to pour water on the areas where there is still slow burning. After that, the crew of the Taiphun will pour a fire-extinguishing substance into the hold of the ship. That will help completely put out the fire on the ship,” the officer said.

The captain of the Nancy sent out a distress signal last Sunday. Twenty-three crewmembers were evacuated from the burning ship to shore. They are all foreign nationals. One of the sailors suffered burns, but his life is not in danger.
