Russian rescuers on Tuesday succeeded in putting out a fire that broke out aboard the Nancy - a cargo ship sailing under the Panamanian flag – in the Russian port of Nakhodka in the Primorie region, an on-duty official of the Vladivostok Maritime Rescue Coordination Center told Ria Novosti on Wednesday.

Some 24 people were reportedly aboard the boat when the fire broke out. They were citizens of Syria, India, Palestine, and Romania. Twenty-three people were evacuated. The captain refused to leave the boat. He remained in radio contact.

The fire was contained by Monday.

“The ship was towed away from the Nakhodka Bay, where there is intensive traffic, towards the far quay,” the official said.

In the meantime, the transport prosecution service has launched an investigation into the incident, together with officers from the transport police and specialists form the Fire Inspection Service. The investigation will have to determine the reasons behind the incident, a spokesman for the Dalnivostok branch of the transport prosecution service told Ria Novosti.
