Anatoly Safonov, the Russian president’s special representative on international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and transnational crime, has announced that the question of making punishment for pirates irreversible must be addressed.
Safonov told a press conference on Tuesday that one of the problems most often encountered in the fight against pirates was that arrested pirates are often released subsequently.
“There were a few instances when arrested pirates were handed over to some states, but these states would immediately release them,” Safonov said, adding that the countries where the pirates are sent should be interested in holding them to account.
In addition, the absence of an agreement between Russia and a number of countries on the extradition of criminals is also a problem, Safonov said.
