Neustrashimy commander wins Captain of the Year award

03.03.2009
The commander of the Russian escort destroyer Neustrashimy, Captain 2nd Class Alexey Apanovich, has been awarded the 2008 Captain of the Year award by the unanimous decision of the Administration Commission of the Sea Port of Kaliningrad. The commission had to choose among six candidates.

The title ‘Captain of the Year’ is awarded every year to the Kaliningrad ship captain who has best demonstrated knowledge to direct a crew in long missions at sea.

The award ceremony, during which the winner will be presented a diploma and a special prize, will be held in Kaliningrad in the coming days.

The escort destroyer Neustrashimy, under the command of Captain 2nd Class Alexey Apanovich, was on a mission in the region of the Horn of Africa in 2008-2009. The region is rated as extremely dangerous because of the frequent pirate attacks against civilian cargo ships that occur there.
