Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard started upgrading Kilo-class diesel-electric sub

Modernization of Kilo-class diesel electric submarine has been started at Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard.

Replacement and preventive maintenance of systems and mechanisms will be carried out at Project 636 submarine, new types of weapon systems will be installed, said Vladimir Aleksandrov, JSC Director General to ITAR-TASS.

Project 636 Kilo submarine designed by Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering is considered one of world's most low-noise subs. It is armed with 4 missiles, 18 torpedoes and 24 mines. Vessel crew is 52. Submarine is capable to dive up to 300 m and move underwater with speed of 37 kph. Kilo is designed for defeat submarines and surface vessels, defense of naval bases and communications, directing reconnaissance.

Currently, the construction of two Kilo-class export submarines is being finished at the shipyard. According to Rosoboronexport contract, one of them will be delivered in 2009, the second one – in 2010.
