Arctic Sea heads for Malta

27.10.2009
Cargo vessel Arctic Sea raised anchor near Gibraltar and is heading for "Maltese port Valetta towed by Shakhtyor tug boat", said Nikolai Karpenkov, Arkhangelsk Branch Director General of the vessel's operator company Solchart.

The ship was at anchor few miles east of Gibraltar escorted by Black Sea Fleet's RNS Ladny as early as week ago.

Recently, the crew got on radio contact for the last time, said Nikolai Karpenkov.

"Everybody feels good, although they have no idea of the vessel's future and further route", he said.

"Hopefully, Arctic Sea heads for Malta for sequent transfer to its owner, Maltese company Arctic Sea Ltd. There was no any official information on that subject", said Karpenkov having added that "one should apply to the Russian Navy for the details".

Sergei Prashin, ship's operator confirmed from Solchart Helsinki Branch that "the vessel is currently near Tunis coast heading for Malta".

As previously reported, Arctic Sea may call at Maltese port upon fulfillment of technical and ecological requirements; after that it will be issued safety certificate and may call at a port, informs ITAR-TASS.
