Russia's foreign policy authority keeps watch of developments around Russian sailors in Vietnam, said Tuesday Andrei Nesterenko, official representative of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sailors went on hunger strike on Monday insisting on returning them home and redemption of wage arrears which is more than eight month indebtedness.

"Russian diplomatic missions track the developments and take necessary steps", Nesterenko said.

Russian diplomats in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh "work in close contact with the crew and the employer", he added.

According to Mr. Nesterenko, "health status of sailors [in the port of Vungtau] is normal, they have no problems with local authorities"; the similar work is being performed in the port of Cam Ranh.

The company's directors promise to settle the problem of indebtedness in the nearest future, Nesterenko added.
