Russia is prepared to consider Ukraine's proposals regarding the Black Sea Fleet. According to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Russia and Ukraine have to strike accord on the border of the Kerch Strait before they sign any legal agreements. Sergei Lavrov made this announcement after meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Konstantin Grishchenko in Kiev. Moscow and Kiev signed an agreement on the status of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Ukraine in 1997. Under the agreement, Russia will rent the fleet's base in Sevastopol for 20 years till 2017 with possible prolongation. Ukraine's former leadership was against the treaty's extension.
