Expecting commemoration of 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Russian Navy joins the action "St. George Ribbon", said representative of Navy Main HQ to RIA Novosti on Thursday.

Action "St. George Ribbon" was planned and realized by RIA Novosti information agency and regional public youth organization "College Community" in the year of 60th anniversary of the Great Victory. Black-and-orange ribbons have become the memorial symbol of Russia's victory in the Great Patriotic War and the sign of everlasting respect to veterans who saved the world from fascism.

"Guard units, ships, submarines, and Navy personnel participating in Victory Day parades will take part in this action", said the interviewee.

St. George ribbons will be honorably placed on the uniform of mariners of all fleets and Caspian Flotilla, main naval bases, and in foreign ports which Russian warships will visit during festive days, pointed out the official.

He added that St. George ribbons were also sent for personnel of NF heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Petr Veliky and BSF Guard missile cruiser Moskva. The crews of those ships are presently on mission in the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.

As for him, Guard ribbon is considered a sign of special distinction in the Navy. Seamen serving on Guard ships and submarines wear sailor caps decorated with St. George's black-and-orange ribbons.

Nowadays following ships, subs and units bear the honorable name of Guard: missile cruisers Varyag and Moskva, large landing ship Azov, nuclear submarine Gepard, destroyer Gremyaschy, Northern Fleet small ASW ships division, missile boats division, and Caspian Flotilla gunnery ship division named after Belgrade, pointed out the interviewee.
