Lead ship of Project 21631 will be laid down for Russian Navy at Zelenodolsky Shipyard on Friday, reported the yard's press service.
"The new ship will have displacement of 949 tons", specified the press service. "The ship will obtain a symbolic for Tatarstan name
Grad Sviyazhsk. It is planned to build several ships of this project".
Grad Sviyazhsk is a missile version of Project 21630
Buyan small-size gunnery ship. Main purpose is engagement of surface warships. This is going to be an up-to-date ship armed with missile and artillery weapons, and equipped with electronic countermeasure equipment. Journalists dubbed the ship as "Toothed Buyan".
"The shipyard won the tender for building of Project 21631 small-size missile ship having fought off five competitors", said the press release of Zelenodolsk town administration. Russian defense minister Anatoly Serdiukov approved the shipbuilding contract on May 26. The yard will build five ships including the lead one.
