India to launch BrahMos from Russian sub

India to launch BrahMos from Russian sub 15.09.2007 Currently, the Indian navy’s submarines do not have the capability to launch BrahMos missiles. Sources in the Indian Defence Ministry said the BrahMos will be tested on an unspecified Russian submarine later this year.
Versions of the BrahMos have been developed for the Indian army, navy and air force. The air version will be integrated on IL-38 maritime surveillance aircraft and the SU 30 MKI multirole aircraft. BrahMos has a range of 300 kilometers. Hypervelocity cruise missile should have speed exceeding 5000 kilometers per hour, making it inaccessible for interception by modern sea defense systems.
Missile flying on ultralow heights can be detected closer than 50-60 kilometers, which cuts interception time to 30-40 seconds. Executive Director of “Bramos” company Sivathanu Pillai says that works on missile development have started already.
The BrahMos cruise missile has been jointly developed by the BrahMos Corp., a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia.
