Russian-Indian INDRA 2009 naval exercises kick off today in Arabian Sea.
The Russian side will be represented in the exercises by five battle ships: the nuclear-powered GM heavy cruiser
Piotr Vilikiy, the big frigate
Admiral Vinogradov, the rescue tug boat
Fotiy Krylov, and the tankers
Pechenga and
Boris Butoma.
Reports in the mass media about the participation of the large landing ships
Azov and
Yamal have yet to be confirmed officially.
The exercises are aimed at drilling the escorting of ships at sea, the fight against pirates at sea and against terrorism. The exercises will also drill communication, as well as mutual coordination between the two navies. Missile and artillery firing are planned.
