Russian Navy denies news of possible U.S., Russian bases in Yemen

Russian Navy denies news of possible U.S., Russian bases in Yemen 30.01.2009
News that both the Russian and U.S. navies plan to set up bases in Yemen has nothing to do with reality, said Captain First Class Igor Dygalo, an aide to the commander of the Russian Navy.

According to Dygalo, such news is groundless and those behind it use unverified facts.

Mass-media have reported, citing a spokesman for the Russian General Staff, that U.S. and Russian warships could soon be based in Yemen, and that the U.S. Navy had set in motion plans for the construction of a base in one of the islands of Yemen. News agencies had earlier reported that the Russian Navy had plans to set up a base in the Yemeni island of Sokotra.
