Heading for Bahrain, American destroyer USS Porter collided with Panama-flagged Japanese oil tanker Otowasan in the Strait of Hormuz in the night of Aug 12. Nobody suffered in the incident, reports Associated Press.

Presently, experts are evaluating damage; the incident is being investigated by special board. Arleigh Burke-class destroyer DDG-78 Porter is operated by US Navy's Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain.

Dubbed in Iran as the "world's lock", the Strait of Hormuz is one of the key geopolitical regions. Over 40 per cent of world's oil shipped by sea passes through the strait.

Earlier on, members of Iranian parliament put forward an initiative to block the strait for shipping if global community continues with sanctions against Tehran.
