Ukrainian cargo ship Faina steaming to Kenya

09.02.2009
The Ukrainian cargo ship Faina, which was released by Somali pirates not long ago against a ransom of more than $3 million, is now sailing towards Kenya.

The ship has increased speed and could reach the Kenyan port of Mombasa on Thursday with its cargo of weapons. The sailors plan to board a plane from Kenya to Ukraine, where they will be welcomed by President Viktor Yuschenko in person.

Two U.S. Navy ships are escorting the Faina.

The Faina, with its cargo of air defense systems, grenade launchers, and ammunitions, was released by pirates on February 5 after spending months in captivity. The pirates received a ransom of $3.2 million.
