New radar was put into service yesterday in Gonio, Georgia near Turkish border. According to Rosbalt, the object was made by the U.S. At commission ceremony attended US Ambassador to Georgia John R. Bass.
The radar will enable Georgia to enhance control at sea as well as timely react on violations of sea borders and traffic of smuggled cargoes.
The radar has been constructed within one year, said Zaza Gogava, the head of Georgian frontier police. "It [radar] will be put into operation since today. For now, all unmonitored sea zones will be completely brought under control. That will help frontier police officers to perform their duties better", he said.
The US ambassador added that construction of the radar was a US long-range investment assisting Georgia to protect national borders from trafficking, drug and arms smuggling.
