China stays non-committal over who or what sank a South Korean patrol boat in a Yellow Sea incident in late March which claimed 46 South Korean lives. At the same time, it is not going to defend the culprits, if and when they are exposed and named. Premier Weng Jiabao told this to the South Korean President Lee Myung-bak at a meeting with him in Seoul on Friday. An international probe into the sinking found a connection to a torpedo fired by a North Korean submarine. North Korea denied involvement and put itself on a war footing. Reports say South Korea asked China to mount a separate Chinese probe into the Yellow Sea incident.
