Solemn launching ceremony of lead frigate Admiral Gorshkov will be held on Friday, reported RIA Novosti citing a spokesman for Russian Navy.

Admiral Gorshkov class frigates are designed for operations in littoral and distant sea zones, as well as for wide range of tasks in ocean zones.

"It is planned that trials of the ship which embodies the newest shipbuilding technologies will start in 2011", said the Navy representative.

He also said that JSC Severnaya Verf is currently engaged in hull shaping of frigate Admiral Flota Kasatonov which is planned to be commissioned in 2012.

In perspective, frigates of this project will join all four Russia's fleets. According to previous statements of naval officials, the need of Russian Navy for such ships is 20-30 vessels. Frigate of this project will become the major class of Russian ocean-going surface fleet in 21st century because of universal capabilities to operate both independently and within a task force.

Project 22350 frigate was developed by Severnoye Design Bureau. The ship has displacement of 4,500 tons; extreme length of over 130 meters; fuel range of 4,000 nm. The ship's armament includes 8 anti-ship missiles 3M55 Onyx, new 130-mm gun mount A-192, ASW missile system Medvedka-2, mid-range SAM system Uragan, and shipborne helicopter Ka-27.
