B-276 Kostroma is a Project 945 Barracuda nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN).

CONSTRUCTION, NAME

The submarine was laid down on April 21, 1984 at Krasnoe Sormovo shipyard (Gorky); launched on July 26, 1986; commissioned into Northern Fleet on December 30, 1987 under the name of K-276; renamed into B-276 on June 3, 1992, then – into Crab on April 6, 1993. The submarine obtained the name of Kostroma on November 15, 1996.

MILESTONES

In Aug 27 – Sept 6, 1988 the sub participated in exercise of 1st submarine flotilla and excellently performed task on search and trailing of foreign submarines.

In 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 the sub carried out patrols.

On Dec 1, 1990 the sub's crew won the 1st Submarine Flotilla Commander Trophy "For best torpedo firing" and gained the lead in division.

The best submarine of Northern Fleet in 1990.

On Feb 11, 1992 at 8.17 pm the sub collided with nuclear submarine USS Baton Rouge while combat training in the Barents Sea at the depth of 21 meters. The sub returned to base with damaged conning tower and sonar head.

In March 28 – June 29, 1992 the sub was repaired at Nerpa shipyard, Olenya Bay.

In Aug 1996 the sub excellently performed missile firing while Northern Fleet's exercise.

On Feb 19, 1997 the sub was consecrated by Father Oleg, rector of Saint George's Church.

In March-Apr 1997 the sub attended Northern Fleet's tactical exercise.

In Apr 1998 the sub participated in Northern Fleet's exercise under auspices of Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief V.I. Kuroyedov.

In 2000 the sub was laid up for repairs.

On Dec 24, 2003 the sub was towed to 10th Ship Repair Plant (Polyarny) for dock repair.

As for 2008, the sub was under repair.

180 mW nuclear reactor OK-650A, 4 steam generators, 2 turbogenerators, 2 groups of storage batteries, 2 x 750 shp diesel generators DG-300 with 10-day fuel load, 1 main screw, 2 x 370 kW low speed engines, two screw low speed.

ARMAMENT

2 x 650-mm and 4 x 533-mm torpedo tubes, 40 torpedoes and rocket torpedoes, 8 MANPADS 9K310 Igla-1 or 9K38 Igla launchers.
