K-266 Orel is a Project 949A Antei nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN).

Northern Fleet, Zaozersk

CONSTRUCTION, NAME

The submarine was laid down on January 19, 1989 at Sevmash shipyard (Severodvinsk); launched on May 22, 1992; commissioned on February 5, 1993. The sub obtained the name of Orel on April 6 (or on March 20), 1993 when she was taken under patronage by Orel city administration.

MILESTONES

In 1995, 1996 the sub won Navy Commander's Prize for missile firing at sea target.

In May 1998 Murmansk governor Y.A. Evdokimov, Northern Fleet Commander V.A. Popov and Northern Fleet Executive Officer M.V. Motsak took the sea on board the sub.

In Aug-Sept 2000 Norwegian and Russian divers were trained on board the sub before salvage operations at SSN Kursk.

In Jan-Aug 2001 the sub was used by experts of rescue service for training before salvage of SSN Kursk.

In Aug-Dec 2001 the sub was involved in inquiry activities of Russian General Procuracy investigating the shipwreck reasons of SSN Kursk.

On Oct 14, 2004 when the sub was crossing the Motovsky Gulf in submerged position, 3rd aft regulating tank exploded due to the failure of relief valve. Nobody suffered; 9th compartment was destructed.

In Oct-Dec 2004 the sub underwent reconditioning repair.

As of 2008, the sub was laid up for repairs.
