Severodvinsk is a Project 855 Yasen multipurpose nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine, lead sub of the project.

CONSTRUCTION

The sub was laid down on December 21, 1993 at Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk and is still under construction. Nikolai Kalistratov, the shipyard's Director General said in 2008 that the sub would be put into service in 2010; however, according to the latest statement of Vice Admiral Oleg Burtsev, Deputy Chief of Navy Main HQ Severodvinsk would be commissioned in 2011.

Kh-101 strategic cruise missiles
3M-54E and 3M-54E1 antiship cruise missiles

According to Russian Naval Doctrine, Yasen-class subs are to become Russia's main nuclear-powered attack submarines. It is planned to build 6 subs of this class.
