B-402 Vologda is a Project 877 diesel electric submarine.

CONSTRUCTION, NAME

The submarine was laid down on August 24, 1983 at Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard (Gorky) under the name of B-402; launched on September 23, 1984; commissioned on August 20, 1986. The sub renamed into Vologda on March 3, 1997 when she was taken under patronage by Vologda city administration.

MILESTONES

In Aug 1992 – June 1993 the sub carried out service tasks in Iran.

In May-June 2001 the sub visited the UK to attend celebration of 100th anniversary of the Royal Navy Submarine Service held in Faslane naval base. Vologda was the only submarine visited by Princess Anna, the patroness of the Royal Navy Submarine Service.

In 2004 the sub took part in the film of Vasily Chiginsky and Ilya Avramenko The Next After God. A 17-ton dummy of WW2 submarine bows was attached to the sub.

Six 533-mm bow torpedo tubes (18 torpedoes or 24 mines); also suitable for launches of Club-S cruise missiles and Strela-3M/Igla-1 antiaircraft missiles.
