Saratov is a Project 1171 Large Landing Ship (LLS), lead ship of the project.

CONSTRUCTION, NAME

The ship was laid down on February 5, 1964 at Yantar shipyard (Kaliningrad) under the name of Voronezhsky Komsomolets; launched on July 1, 1964; commissioned in 1966. The ship was renamed into BDK-65 in 1992; into Saratov – in 2003.

MILESTONES

Since 1966 till 2004 it carried out over 20 long-term cruises with marine units on board.

In 1991 the ship was deactivated and stored in Odessa till 1994.

In August 2000 it performed 4 voyages from loading terminal Gonio (near Batumi) to discharge terminal Utrishenok (near Novorossiysk) carrying a part of armament and weapons of Russian force based in Transcaucasia.

On August 10, 2008 being a part of BSF detachment, the ship took part in sea battle against Georgian missile boats during conflict in South Ossetia.
