On Dec 20, defense-oriented Zvezdochka shipyard will lay down a keel for an up-to-date Project 20183 supply ship for Russian Navy, the yard's press secretary Nadezhda Scherbinina told ITAR-TASS today.

According to her, that will be the third ship of this class keel-laid at Zvezdochka. It is not reported about the ship's characteristics and purpose.

In 2010, the shipyard handed over a harbor rescue tug named Zvezdochka (Project 20180) to Northern Fleet. At present, the ship serves at White Sea Naval Base.

In Dec 2011, the yard laid down a keel for armament support ship Akademik Kovalev. It is an ice-class ship designed for loading, unloading and sealift of armament systems and ammunitions. The ship is supposed to join Russian Navy late in 2014. Her length is 107.6 meters; overall beam is 17.8 meters; full-load displacement is 6,300 tons; crew is 60 men. The ship is capable to accommodate helicopters Ka-29. Director General of JSC Zvezdochka Vladimir Nikitin said that "we expect to build a large series of such ships differing in modifications and purposes". The project was developed by the Almaz Design Bureau (St. Petersburg).

Employing about 14,000 persons, Zvezdochka is one of Russia's leading shipyards specialized in repair and upgrading of nuclear-powered submarines. The shipyard has also mastered construction of surface ships, including fishing trawlers. Zvezdochka has two covered slipways and seven shipbuilding sites meant for overhaul and construction of ships weighing up to 18,000 tons.
