03.12.2009
Large ASW ship Admiral Chabanenko will escort subsequent convoy of merchant vessels through the Gulf of Aden on Friday. On December 8 the Russian ship will escort another convoy in the opposite direction, reports Interfax.

Russian Navy task unit led by Admiral Chabanenko started its anti-piracy mission on enhancing navigation security near Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden.

Since early 2009, that has been fourth unit of Russian combat ships sent to the Gulf of Aden to fight piracy. Large ASW ship Admiral Tributs along with auxiliary vessels has recently returned to Vladivostok; they had been securing navigation near Somalia in October.

In recent years Somali pirates have become a serious world problem which required interference of navies from several countries, including Russia; they provide patrolling near Horn of Africa. This year three PF task units have been keeping watch at that region.
