The Malaysian Navy has received the first Scorpene sub built by a consortium including the French company DCNS and Spain's Navantia.
According to Space War, the transfer of the sub, which received the name of
Tanku Abdul Rahman, took place in Toulon, France. The sub will be in Malaysia in the second half of 2009.
The contract for the construction of the sub was signed in 2002. The construction of two submarines will cost $US 1.5 Bln. The
Tanku Abdul Rahman, the first, was built in Cherbourg, France, and put into water in 2007. The second sub, the
Tun Razak was put into water in October 2008, and in October 2009 it would be transferred to the client.
Scorpene subs have a water-displacement capacity of 1,740 tonnes, a length of 67.6 meters, and a maximum width of 8 meters. They can dive to a depth of up to 350 meters and develop a maximum speed of 20.5 knots (38.3 Km/h). The weapon system includes six 533-mm caliber antiship torpedoes.
