Stronger NATO presences in the Arctic

24.08.2009 NATO's General Secretary, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, wants a stronger NATO- presence in the arctic, as changing climate makes the area more accessible.

Changing climate opens up previously undisclosed areas of the Arctic, and thus creates a new arena which has to be taken into consideration in world security matters.

– The fact that melting of the ice cap will open a new sea route in the Polar Regions, and make mineral resources in this part of the world accessible, will also affect the security in the area. This we have to address, Fogh Rassmussen said during a meeting on Iceland last week according to NRK.

It is especially the estimated oil and gas resources in the Arctic which has caught the world's attention.
